Common Core State Standards

Education standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject, in each grade.  In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school.  Since 2010, forty-five states have adopted the same standards for English and Math.  These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state.  Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.  The California Department of Education (CDE) helps schools make sure that all students are meeting the standards.

New Brochures Explain the California Common Core State Standards!!

What kinds of things will your child learn in mathematics and English language arts in first grade?  New brochures focused on the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy will help answer such questions.  The eight new brochures, four in each subject area, are organized by grade spans (K-2, 3-5, 6-8) and provide insight into what students will be learning.

The brochures on mathematics standards showcase example problems, and the brochures on the ELA/Literacy standards highlight the progression of learning through the grade levels.  Each brochure also provides suggestions for parents / guardians to support their students' learning and a list of additional resources.

The brochures can be downloaded from the Sacramento County Office of Education Web page individually:

  • English Language Arts / Literacy - Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8
  • Mathematics - Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8

The brochures were developed on behalf of the Consortium fro the Implementation of the Common Core under the leadership of the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division of the California Department of Education and the Sacramento County Office of Education.

The Cypress School District maintains current, State approved curriculum companies to support the instruction in all classrooms. If you would like further information on the State Framework or Content Standards, you can access the California Department of Education’s Curriculum and Instruction materials website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/.
