Student Transfers

Cypress School District boundaries include most of Cypress as well as portions of La Palma and Buena Park.

Per Education Code, students must have permission to attend school within a boundary area or school district other than the one in which they live. This permission is granted in the form of either an INTRADISTRICT or INTERDISTRICT transfer.

  • INTRADISTRICT = Transferring between schools within the Cypress School District
  • INTERDISTRICT = Transferring into or out of the Cypress School District

Placement Priority for Intradistrict and Interdistrict Transfers:

1.     CYPSD students living within the school's boundaries
2.     CYPSD students on a previously approved intradistrict transfer
3.     Sibling of a student currently in attendance
4.     CYPSD students requesting intradistrict transfers
6.     All non-CYPSD students requesting interdistrict transfers

All Interdistrict transfer applications should be submitted to the Cypress School District Office located at 9470 Moody Street, Cypress.  School offices cannot process Interdistrict transfer requests.

Transfer forms are available on the Cypress School District website, at the Cypress School District Office, and at each school site.

INTRADISTRICT TRANSFERS

If you live within the boundaries of the Cypress School District and wish to enroll your student in a school other than your home school . . .

The Cypress School District Board of Trustees endorses the neighborhood public school concept. As an open enrollment district, the Board recognizes that parents may wish to choose a school of attendance other than their assigned school.

The annual Open Enrollment period for intradistrict transfers for the upcoming school year is March 15 through May 15.  Open Enrollment is the only time parents may request a transfer from their home school of residence to another school within the District.

Intradistrict transfers do not need to be renewed – once granted, intradistrict transfers are irrevocable even if you move to another location within the Cypress School District.  Your permanent home school will be the school that was approved on the intradistrict transfer.

Each school is required to serve the students who live within its attendance boundaries before accepting students outside the boundaries. Students may not be displaced from their home school of residence because of new intradistrict students.  After all students within each school’s attendance area have been accommodated, remaining placement requests will be considered.

In general, students living within a school's boundaries have first priority for enrollment. However, when a school is overcrowded, a student may be requested to "overflow" to a school that is not their home school of residence. In such cases, students have the right of continued enrollment at their new assigned school, and it will be treated as their new home school. Students who are overflowed may only return to their home school of residence as space becomes available.

New students starting the school year in Cypress School District who wish to attend a school other than their home school of residence must enroll at their home school and concurrently submit an intradistrict transfer request during Open Enrollment.  Students who move into the District after the annual Open Enrollment period may apply for a spot in a school other than their home school of residence, but only on a space-available basis.

Transportation is not provided to schools chosen during Open Enrollment.

Students approved for intradistrict placement must have, and maintain, satisfactory attendance, effort, academic achievement, and behavior.

Application Procedure:

Currently Enrolled CYPSD Student: (Accepted only during open enrollment)

1.     Fill out an Intradistrict Transfer Agreement and submit to the District Office during the annual Open Enrollment period (March 15 – May 15).
2.     Parent/guardian will be notified of the decision by early June.

New Student to Cypress School District:

1.     Pick up an enrollment packet and Intradistrict Transfer Agreement from your home school.
2.     Return the completed enrollment packet and transfer agreement to your home school.
3.     Parent/guardian will be notified of the decision by early June.

INTERDISTRICT TRANSFERS - INCOMING

If you do not live within the boundaries of the Cypress School District and wish to enroll your student in a Cypress school . . .

Cypress School District accepts interdistrict transfer requests from students in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade who live outside the Cypress School District boundaries and wish to attend a school in Cypress.  The parent/guardian must first contact their district of residence to obtain a release from that district. Once obtained, Cypress School District will consider the request.

The priority acceptance period for incoming interdistrict transfers for the upcoming 2014-15 school year is February 7 - May 15, 2014.  The district will continue to accept interdistrict transfers for new students year round; however, the request must be received by May 15, 2014 to guarantee it is processed for the 2014-15 school year.  Applications received after May 15, 2014 will not be considered until after the open enrollment period.

NOTE:  Per Ed. Code 48204, "A school district may deem a pupil to have complied with the residency requirements for school attendance in the district if at least one parent or the legal guardian of the pupil is physically employed within the boundaries of that district for a minimum of 10 hours during the school week."  An interdistrict transfer form must be completed for requests based on employment.

Once an interdistrict transfer has been approved and the student has been enrolled in the district, that student will be considered a permanent student.  There is no need to request another Interdistrict transfer, unless their home school district requires it.

Students accepted to the Cypress School District on an interdistrict transfer must have, and maintain, satisfactory attendance, effort, academic achievement, and behavior.
